The constellation Gemini, the twins, is one of the easiest to see in the night sky, and its celestial charms have inspired designers to make jewelry that celebrate it.

Castor and Pollux, mythological Greek heroes who were twins, were probably the inspiration behind Gemini. The inseparable pair had supporting roles in the Trojan War. They were two of the Argonauts who accompanied Jason on the search for the Golden Fleece. When Castor was killed in battle, the distraught Pollux convinced Zeus to raise his brother from the dead. One version of the myth has the two brothers achieving immortality by becoming the constellation, Gemini.

Perhaps this story of brotherly love and loyalty influenced the personality characteristics assigned to Gemini. Those born under the sign (between May 21-June 20) are said to be flexible, intellectual, witty, and soft-spoken.

With so many positive associations, Gemini is rich in virtues. Today, GIA shares some jewelry that captures the spirit of the sign – and that should flatter any Gemini.

Lapis lazuli plays the role of the sky, while a diamond acts as a star in this pendant by Van Cleef & Arpels. The figures of Castor and Pollux in high-carat gold create a dramatic contrast to the inky dark blue backdrop.

Hexagonal-Ring

The center stone of this ring can be changed out for black onyx, lapis lazuli, malachite, tiger’s-eye, carnelian, or hematite beads. Photo by Robert Weldon/GIA, gift of Heart & Co./Orbis by Ron Hartgrove.

Gemini are said to be flexible and versatile, so they should love Ron Hartgrove’s Orbis ring. The wearer can change out black onyx, lapis lazuli, malachite, tiger’s-eye, carnelian, or hematite beads as the mood strikes. Some 26 bead-set round brilliant-cut diamonds of about 0.015 carat each create a glittering circle of light around the center stone.

Lydia Courteille’s Gemini ring has a playful quality. Surrounding a rock crystal sphere, the diamond-encrusted twins float between a sea of sapphires and a spray of green garnets – perhaps allusions to Castor’s and Pollux’s sea-faring adventures.

Our imaginative interpretation of Castor and Pollux: a natural-color golden South Sea cultured pearl and a treated-color chocolate Tahitian cultured pearl are bound together in this 18K white gold ring pavé set with .78 carats total weight of diamonds.
