An archer, taking the form of a centaur, a half human, half horse mythological character, strides across the night sky taking aim with its bow and arrow. The noble vision is Sagittarius, the constellation associated with the ninth zodiac sign covering those born between November 22 to December 21 – a sign that’s inspired some magnificent jewelry.
The myth of Sagittarius may have had its start in Sumeria (4000-2000 B.C.E.), where the constellation was thought to depict an archer. In the second century B.C.E., Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer, recorded the constellation. Sagittarius, which is Latin for archer, may have been adapted from an ancient Greek myth that honored Crotus, a satyr (half human, half goat), credited with inventing the hunting bow. In the night sky, Sagittarius is aiming his arrow at Scorpio who is chasing Orion.
